Greetings all,

This is from a friend of mine -- on the subject of when Rashi interprets a
verse according to, or contrary to, the trop.

He raised the following two observations on the latter -- anyone have any
comments?  (If so, please cc to <adam_bman at yahoo.com>, as well as the list)

Breishis 1:1 s.v. “בראשית ברא" (Breishis Bara)
The verse seems to describe the order of creation. Thus, the verse would be
rendered, “In the beginning, G-d created the heavens and the earth.” Rashi
notes, however, that this can't be for a variety of reasons (Rashi states
two grammatical/linguistic reasons and one contextual reason). One reason
is that the construct of the word ראשית (Reishis) is a smichut with the
word that follows it. While the previous translation understands בראשית
(B'rieshis) to mean “in the beginning,” Rashi translates it as “in the
beginning *of.*” Rashi's translation seems not to fit with the trop because
there is a smichut that spans a טפחא (tipcha) (under בראשית (Bereishis)).
Compare with the Ramban who favors the translation “in the beginning, G-d
created...” This translation seems to fit with the trop better than Rashi's
translation.

Devarim 25:2 s.v. “במספר" (B'mispar)
Verse two discusses the obligation of beis din to administer lashes to a רשע
(Rasha). Verse three tells what number of lashes to administer. Rashi
comments that the last word of verse two, “מספר,” (Mispar) should be viewed
as modifying the first word of verse three, “ארבעים.” (Arba'im) This
explanation seems to run contrary to the trop because the sof pasuk between
them indicates they are separate from one another.
It is worthy to note that the comment in parentheses explains that the
vowels on the word במספר (Bamispar) indicate it is דבוק (d'vuk) to the word
ארבעים (Arba'im). This seems to support the notion that Rashi ascribes more
interpretive weight to the vowels than he does to the trop.
