According to the Tiberian Masorah, the Shwa is normally pronounced just like a shot pasakh, and the difference that Akiva points to is realized bi pronouncing the daghesh hazard in the following letter, or reading it rafe’. In Europe, however, they pronounced the Shwa differently than the ba’alei haMasorah did.
