Thanks. This was far from the first time I was taught something and
didn't notice an implication until sharing it -- and then it is
obviously problematic to multiple readers. I don't have an answer,
although I have a list of sidurim to check their comment on "hamqadeish
shemo barabim" and how I misunderstood. 

I also don't think the Gra proposed amending nusachos. Rather, he chose
the nusach that conformed to his textualist's analysis of what "must" be
right. As in this case, where he sided with the Rambam's nusach over
Ashkenaz's.
