[Mesorah] kodashim

I am curious: Is any of this discussion mentioned in Shulchan Aruch or Rambam, or their nosei kelim, or in any other "mainstream" (for lack of a better word) seforim? Or is it discussed only in Minchas Shai and other works which would likely been seen mostly by baalei kriah?

Somehow, this topic seems too large and important to have been relegated to an esoteric corner. I'm referring not only to the specific "kodashim/kadashim" question, but to this whole business of entire communities supposedly changing their pronunciation, and such.

I'm just curious, and looking for seforim that I might have access to (and be able to understand) that mention these ideas. (Yes, I mentioned Wikipedia in a previous post. I'm hoping to find something more Jewish.)
