Why wait? "V'im hashatz ma'arich b'nigun shel 'v'imru amein' 
yomru kakahal 'amein' miyad," says the Magen Avraham in 124:14.

Ein hachi nammi. Although the second case is a little different: The chazzan isn't necessarily being maarich; the kahal is just cutting in. So I'm not justified in answering before the chazzan is finished. The frustration is being the lone answerer after everyone else.
