RHS told the following story many times in shiur. The Chasam Sofer would
write his teshuvos and leave them on the desk for his son, the Ksav Sofer,
to review and mail. One day he saw that the teshuva that he had written the
previous day was still sitting there. He asked his son why he didn’t mail
it. His son answered that the questioner was a big Talmud chacham and the
teshuva was short with a weak proof. The Chasam Sofer told his son that he
paskened based on his initial feeling and then looked at the sugya to make
sure he was right and therefore the proofs were not that important.
