The tzeireh vs. segol split between mss. is nothing new -- for a recent
pre-Purim example, see the last word of Ex 32:6 -- and I would surmise that
our m'sorah is trying to capture a certain sound that, orthographically,
was denoted by some as a segol and by others as a tzeirah.
