[Mesorah] Hoshanot: Samech vs Sin

Your point is (as usual) excellent!

The congregant is a math professor at a Montreal university and often is
perturbed by some perceived incongruities.  On the positive side, he
usually prepares very beautiful gematria discussions for us.
