Shavua tov, y'all

A friend of mine passed the following question to me -- any thoughts from
the chevra?

(I can't recall if Hebrew characters pass well on this list, if not so
well, I'll resend with inserted transliterations]:

Re: how to read Shemos 25:39.... I asked [the baal koreh] afterwards and
he said that there is a big dispute whether the second כ of the word ככר is
vowelized with a פתח or a קמץ. He said the difference is that with a קמץ it
is just brick, but with a פתח it is a סמיכות. He said he was going to read
it with a קמץ because that's how it appears in the Keter edition of the
Tanach, but then he saw onkelus that clearly indicates that it is a smichut
(כיכרא דדהב). I asked him if the תביר under the word is an indication that
it isn't a סמיכות and he said by itself no, but could be used to help
support the case if it was one of a few factors.
What do you think?
