A few comments:

1 Apparently S'phardim have accepted this emendation

2. I have a chevra of Sephardic Rabbis helping me research this a bit further.

3. Rabbenu Tam's emendation seems hardly noteworthy in the general scheme of Ashk'nazic Liturgical Lore which was demonstrably quite elastic. Which explains how so few of you knew about it, because it was really no big deal.
