One more thought re (and k'neged) REMT's "Maybe the hei is in effect part of the name...rather than a HH": Onqelos doesn't translate the name with a heih (one would think he would have done so if the heih was part of the place name rather than a HH).

Had Akiva continued his worthwhile friendship with Señor Google by searching for "heh hayediah ayin dagesh", the first search result (http://www.shemayisrael.com/parsha/klarberg/archives/balak61.htm)'s first section would have provided an answer.  Enjoy, Akiva (and everyone else)!

Perhaps a bit OT (as (a) I grew up in The Heights; and (b) we're talking TaNaCH, not 'hoods), but the USPS (which may soon be but a memory) delivers to "Bronx, NY", so I don't tink dat Da Bronx needs de "Da," derfore it ain't part of da name.

On the one hand, my guess about the ayin seems to be confirmed. On the other hand, I'm intrigued by the comment "Ayin (in most cases)". What about the other cases? Does the ayin have a dagesh, or does the heh have a patach?

The rest of that article was way above my head, but I highly recommend it to the rest of the Mesorah listmembers.

(By the way, I found that article simply by entering "heh hayediah" into Google. That article was the very first hit.)
