[Mesorah] Meaning of m'tim

Shalom u'vracha -

In last week's parsha the word "m'tim" came up, which Rashi explains to mean "anashim".

What is the shoresh of this word?  Is it related to the expression m'tei mispar?  Is it related to "mavet"?  If so, what's the  connection?
