"I have no sources, but "vayeosef el amov" always
sounded to me like it refers to something *after*
death, perhaps relating to the funeral and/or burial."

Chazal (Sifrei )on Devarim 32:50 where the phrase is
used in reference to Moshe Rabbeynu, say it means he
was gathered "by ("aytzel") Avraham, Yitzchak and
Yaakov, your [fore]fathers; by Kehath and Amram, your
fathers; by Aharon and Miriam, your siblings." (By
the way, since this is mesorah, note
"acheycha"--interestingly used for when males and
females are included together).

It is indeed referring to something after death,
namely Olom Habah. (Moshe Rabbeynu, Kehath, Amaram,
Aharon and Miriam are not buried in the Mearath
HaMachpela with the three Avos.)
