[Avodah] Popcorn et al on Pesach

Corn and peanuts are both New World foods that were unknown at the time the ban on kitniyos was first promulgated, and logically  should not be banned for that reason, just as potatoes, also a New World food, are not banned on Pesach.  Potatoes can be made into flour and cooked and baked in all kinds of ways that resemble chometz products, but were never banned because they were a New World food and because they became a staple food in Eastern Europe, without which actual starvation would have been a danger.  I don't know how or when corn and peanuts came to be regarded as kitniyos.
