I made a typing error there. What I had intended to write was:

"There is NO situation in which actually doing Avodah Zara could possibly
be *L'Shem Shamayim*. It's a contradiction in terms."

It's not difficult to imagine situations (or cite historical incidents)
where someone might do an aveirah L'Shem Shamayim. But that's for the other
612. It seems to me categorically impossible for someone to do actual Avoda
Zara (as opposed to merely going through the motions, which is also assur,
but *possibly* not yehareg v'al yaavor) for L'Shem Shamayim reasons.
