My  brother-in-law said the following at a simcha yesterday evening:
Zephania  1:12 says "ahapes et Yerushalaim banerot", and the gematria
of "nerot" is  equal to the number of times in which Jerusalem is
mentioned in the  Bible.

A cute vort if you like that kind of thing, and I am probably  spoiling
it by checking up, but it doesn't seem to fit the  facts.

...

Does anybody have more info, especially some kvetch to  make the
gematria fit the total?

One kvetch that works for all gematrios is to just use approximate numbers  
and not try too hard to make them come out exactly.  Nerot = 656 and  
Yerushalayim appears 669 times?  Close enough!  Quick  mental arithmetic without 
benefit of calculators works best for  gematrios.  Disclaimer:  I am not 
really a fan of gematrios, most of  them seem forced or trivial to me.  
However, I will say that the Gra  seems to have had an amazing knack for noticing 
clever gematrios that  really do work well -- it's as if he saw everything he 
read both verbally  and mathematically, simultanously.
