My thought when I read R' Akiva's post about the young man who lost his wife is that he was undoubtedly in total shock at the levaya.  No one expects to lose a wife in childbirth today.  His apparent calm may well have reflected numbness.  It is certainly a stretch to assume that he was relatively indifferent.
