color=#000000>The war, for the moment, is over. The refugee tents at the nearby
Nitzanim beach have been packed away. People from the north have gone back home,
the damage assessed, the repairs to bombed out properties has begun. Businesses
have reopened and people have returned to work. The three kidnapped soldiers
remain kidnapped. There are cries for a serious inquiry into the war that has
been so badly handled. The government takes no notice.<BR><BR>We, the refugees
of Gush Katif, remain in limbo for we cannot go home and we still have no jobs.
We are no longer on the back burner. We are off the stove.<BR><BR>Engagements:
Our lives go on. On one of my evening power walks around the camp I stopped to
watch singing and dancing at one of the caravillas.<BR><BR>"Rachel, come on
over" Celia called out. Vigorous hand waving was followed by Celia running
across the street. "We get a mazal tov! Our daughter and Rivka and Shlomo's son
have just gotten engaged!" The young couple have lived next door to each
other since childhood in Neve Dekalim. Now their parent's caravillas are side by
side. We hugged and kissed and I joined the festivities.<BR><BR>Music: Alex, my
flute teacher, came this morning for our lesson. His wife Dora went to fill out
his forms for employment at our makeshift community center. The music program is
starting up. Two weeks ago the Gush Katif orchestra gave its first performance
after a year's hiatus. Energetic Sophia put the players through their paces. I
smiled, I wept silently, I thanked the Lord for reaching this
day.<BR><BR>OPERATION DIGNITY provided music stands and practice guitars for the
Gush Katif musicians.<BR><BR>Gallery: A busload of visitors from Jerusalem's
Israel Center arrived to visit the Gush Katif refugee camp. Farmer Anita Tucker
acted as tour guide. Her sister, my neighbor Esther Lilienthal who had
celebrated her fiftieth wedding anniversary the previous night, spoke of our
hardships. I spoke of our future.<BR><BR>The Orange Gallery, an OPERATION
DIGNITY enterprise, presented a rich display of artwork and handicrafts. We sold
and sold!<BR><BR>Requests for our Gallery to appear are coming in from all parts
of Israel. Our Marketing Director Debbie Rozen had her own powerful photography
exhibit of Gush Katif graffiti in a Ra'anana gallery. There has been a burst of
creative-artistic energy and our Orange Gallery, despite the lack of a building,
has given hope and employment to our artists and artisans.<BR><BR>Wedding
Showers: Our young people are getting married and communities throughout Israel
are making traditional bridal showers for Gush Katif brides and grooms. The
showers have spread to North America and have become a superb vehicle to unite
hearts across the ocean.<BR><BR>Our young couples have been receiving their
small appliances, dishes, linen, silverware and cash to defray their wedding
costs. Parents, often unemployed, have been unable to provide these basics for
their children. The couples are filled with disbelief and awe when they receive
their gifts.<BR><BR>OPERATION DIGNITY has had the privilege of being the conduit
for the cash gifts. Call Sharon Katz in Efrat [972-(0)2-9932396, 972-524-213600]
for information on how you can plan a Gush Katif shower.<BR><BR>A Memorial
Service Bryna and Sammy Hilberg of Netzer Hazani held the yahrzeit ceremony for
their naval hero son, disinterred from the Gush Katif cemetery and now reburied
in the Nitzan cemetery.<BR><BR>Wearing a black t-shirt inscribed "A Jew Evicted
Me From My Home", Bryna cried "I feel that I cannot protect my children. I
couldn't even protect my son's grave. What kind of a mother am I?"<BR><BR>A
Police Record Standing close by was Udi. She too had been forced to rebury a
son. "How are you, Udi?" I asked. No answer. Her body was stiff, her eyes
glazed. "Are you alright?" I asked. </FONT></SPAN></FONT></P>

husband explained: "She had taken a translator's course given by the Defense
Ministry. Afterwards she was refused employment because she has a police record.
Refusing to show her ID at the entrance to Gush Katif she was badly beaten by
police officers, and a report was filed against her. The case never came to
court but the police record remains intact. She can never find meaningful work.
Her bitterness has<BR>turned her to stone." <BR><BR>The hurt, the betrayal and
the anger is always with us. The northern refugees have gone home. Major Jewish
organizations have collected millions upon millions of dollars to help them
recover from their five-week war. A year later we are still begging for our
homes and proper compensation. Here and there, an awakening. What made Gush
Katif special will always be with us, and despite our despair we go
on.<BR>#########<BR>Please keep up with news of Gush Katif communities scattered
