International Day of Commemoration
of the Victims of the Holocaust
at the United Nations, January 29
Registration Required
For more information or to register to attend, please send your name,
organization and e-mail address to holocaustremembrance at un.org. You may also send a
fax to (212) 963-0536. Please note that all guests must pre-register,
present an identity card with a photograph and pass through security to enter the
United Nations building. Guests should arrive by 9:00 A.M. in order to clear
security. Please also note that seating in The General Assembly Hall is
limited and on a first come, first served basis.
On January 29, 2007, the United Nations Department of P u b l i c
Information (DPI) will observe the second annual International Day of Commemoration in
memory of the victims of the Holocaust with a ceremony from 10:30 AM to 12:00
PM m the General Assembly Hall at United Nations Headquarters. Simone Veil,
President of the Fondation Pour la Memoire de la Shoah and a survivor of the
Holocaust, will deliver the keynote address.
In keeping with the theme of “Remembrance and Beyond,” the observance will
focus on the importance of infusing today’s youth with the lessons of the
Holocaust, so that future generations may carry the torch of remembrance, and
remind the world of the dangers posed by hatred, bigotry,racism and prejudice,
A university student will speak on the importance of learning about
theHolocaust and share her experiences visitingHolocaust sites in Poland as part of
the March of Remembrance and Hope program. The event will highlight the
importance of education in promoting tolerance and ending any and all forms of
discrimination.This observance is being organized by the Holocaust and the United
Nations outreach program, created by the context ofGeneral Assembly
resolution 60/7 in order to help to prevent future acts of genocide.In addition, there
will be two exhibits in the United Nations Visitors’ Lobby in connection
with the International Day: One will feature artwork,created by Holocaust
survivors, exploring the meaning and experience of the Holocaust and the second is “
The Holocaust against the Sinti and Roma and Present Day Racism in Europe.”

chayalim (soldiers) & for everyone living in Israel. Israel also has eight
soldiers in enemy captivity, namely:
Gilad ben Aviva (Shalit), captured just outside Gaza on June 25 of this year;
Ehud ben Malka (Goldwasser) and Eldad ben Tova (Regev), captured on the
Israeli-Lebanese border July 12 of this year;
Guy ben Rina (Hever), disappeared near the Syrian-Israeli border in the
Golan Heights in August 1997;
Ron ben Batya (Arad), captured when his plane was downed over Lebanon in
Oct. 1986;
Tzvi ben Pninah (Feldman), Yekutiel Yehuda Nachman ben Sarah (Katz), and
Zecharia Shlomo ben Miriam (Baumel), all captured at the Sultan Yaaqub battle in
Lebanon on June 11,1982.
