<div dir="ltr">The explanation is simpler, if we are talking Ashkenaz mss. Remember that in the medieval period Ashkenazim used the Sefaradim pronunciation, and so you can expect to find forms where tzere an Segal alternate, and qomatz and pasach. Those account
for almost all of the variants, e.g. zeikher and zekher.
<div>It was a vowel change in Ashkenaz which caused, for example the German word “was” (“what”) to change to Yiddish “vos.” After the change they used the new “aw” vowel for the qomatz. Same with tzere vs. segol: before the change there was only one vowel;
after it, two. </div>

The tzeireh vs. segol split between mss. is nothing new -- for a recent pre-Purim example, see the last word of Ex 32:6 -- and I would surmise that our m'sorah is trying to capture a certain sound that, orthographically, was denoted by some as a segol and by
others as a tzeirah.</div>

In talking about the מגילה with someone today, he mentioned that the reader read the word נזק twice once with a צירה on the נון and once with a סגול. Breuer’s texts and sources (Leningrad Codex) clearly have only צירה. However, the רד”ק in ספר השורשים says
clearly שש נקודות, and קורן seems to follow that.<br class="null">
