Since Danny Levy has raised the subject, it is time to review the well-known rule of מש"ה מוציא וכל"ב מכניס. What I would like to know is when the earliest source anyone can find for this rule.</div>

It is clearly not from the Masorah. The Masorah talks in Aramaic, and uses the word מפיק or נפק, as it does many times when talking about an letter that is pronounced, as in T'hillim 136:3 about the form l'adonei, the Masorah says ט' מפק' א'<span style="font-size: 10pt;">
