[Mesorah] וכן היינו לעיניהם?

A friend of a friend has recently been reading from an older (before 1750 CE) ספר תורה and has found that it has found that it has "וכן היינו לעיניהם” rather than “בעיניהם" in (שלח לך (במדבר יג:לג. I believe that this is a simple one-off mistake that any סופר could make, but does anybody know of a particular trend or set of variants that includes this particular difference?
