The phrase is also the standard usage by other chasidim, not just Chabad.  But it is significant that the L. Rebbe writes that "pnimiyus haTorah IS chasidus."

But this is why I asked to begin with. A certain proponent of chasidus used the term to refer to the Ari and the Vilner Gaon, whereas I would have used the term "al pi sod" or "al pi qabbolo," not this phrase.

     I don't presume to know what the Alshich, Malbim, et al., meant by p'nimius haTorah, but IIANM the standard wedding congratulatory letter of the last Lubavitcher rebbe uses the phrase "al pi p'nimius haTorah zo hachasidus."
