[Mesorah] Bemidbar or Bamidbar?

Cute discussion with little halachic significance. (I am on the side of not needing to keep the way we refer to the Parasha consistent with how it's actually read when we read it in Shul.)

Where it can make a difference is in bentching. If we say that HKBH builds Y'rushalayim "b'rachamav," than it's "boneh b'rachachamav," whereas if we leave it out, it's "bonay Y'rushalayim." Yet most Siddurim and Bentchers keep the "bonay" while also including "b'rachamav"!

Artscroll is correct, and the circles you run in are not. The fifth word
of the sedra is "b'midbar", but the short title of the sedra and of the sefer,
is "Bamidbor", with a patoch on the first beis and a komatz on the second.
In older sources you will find a slightly longer title, "Bemidbar Sinai",
which is of course pronounced as it appears.
