It's a nice hiddur, but what's the basis for the Shatz to daven sideways?

Is there a source for such hakpada whilst the Torah is resting?

EG how does one do g'lilah on Torah #1 whilst Torah #2 is on the bima?

IMHO it seems like a humra that tends to creates kullos
