[Mesorah] Meaning of m'tim

It may very well be from the root mwt.  Ugaritic "mt" and Akkadian "mutu"
can mean husband or warrior.  Egyptian "mt" may be a loanword from Ethiopic
"met", husband.  [HALOT, p.653]
It seems to be used in Biblical Hebrew only in the plural, so I wonder if it
had already become anachronistic and limited to certain fixed usages.

In last week's parsha the word "m'tim" came up, which Rashi explains to mean
"anashim".

What is the shoresh of this word?  Is it related to the expression m'tei
mispar?  Is it related to "mavet"?  If so, what's the  connection?
