[Mesorah] Meaning of m'tim

BTW, try asking your average person – even a TC, what is the meaning of
m’sim?

Few know – despite hearing it several times during krias jaTorah. (And few
seem to get that far - even if they do learn some Chumash Rashi).

 

Same result this week when asking the translation of ‘tachas ashdos
hapisgah’…

In last week's parsha the word "m'tim" came up, which Rashi explains to mean
"anashim".

What is the shoresh of this word?  Is it related to the expression m'tei
mispar?  Is it related to "mavet"?  If so, what's the  connection?
