<DIV>I would say he gets schar for putting on tefillin but does not get the
actual kedusha/spiritual benefit transmitted by metaphysical radio waves that
his non-functioning tefillin-radio never picked up. (Or maybe it works the
other way, tefillin transmit something that goes up to Heaven to make a
connection.) I wouldn't compare pasul tefillin to a broken case
but to a broken radio -- perhaps one that is able to receive AM but not FM, or
that can pick up some stations but only with a lot of static. If his boss
is paying him to carry a radio around, the boss might well pay him even though
the radio broke but he still didn't get the transmissions.</DIV>
