    As far as I know the story first appears in Or Zarua, whose author

    was a prominent member of Hasidei Ashkenaz, a student of both R.

    Yehudah HeHassid and the author of the Rokeah (which contains an

    extensive list of penances, none so extreme as having one's tongue

    cut out).<br>
