A RC associate at my firm died a few years ago, and the religious people at the firm went to the wake (which was in a funeral chapel) (One person, a kohen, went early enough to "catch" the family at home and express his condolences, thereby avoiding issues of tum'as ohel).

Due to the long standing association with religious people, the person's family understood that we could not come to the funeral mass on Saturday. Given the fact that we did not ignore the family and shlepped nearly two hours each way to the wake, I think it would have been understood even if the mass was not on Shabbos.

Gershon
gershon.dubin@juno.com
