I'm pretty sure it's a Mishna - to use a medium sized olive, each chochom
using what he has available.
(R Yehuda says to take the biggest and smallest you can find and divide
volume by 2. Counterargument: how do you know you found the biggest and
smallest? Safer to use a medium sized one.)
But embarrassingly so I cannot locate this Mishna. Even electronically.
(I usually finish Shas Mishnayos thrice yearly. But for round 41 I decided
to use Kehati again, and it's taking me 9 months.)
Also see the the Rambam at the end of Keilim ch. 17 (last sentence) where
he writes:
Ein medakdekim b'chol hashiurim ho'eilu shekoolom hen midivrei sofrim.
(When measuring strange shaped earthenware ovens we don't measure very
accurately is it's Rabbinic impurity.)
Obviously not applicable across the board.
