December 31, 2021, 27 Teves, will mark the 133rd Yahrzeit of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch.

There is an interesting story associated with his passing. In Germany, all religious officials were paid quarterly by the government from taxes collected from the population. The payments were made at the beginning of a quarter. Towards the end of his life Rabbiner Hirsch was concerned that he would die during a quarter, and the balance of the money he received for the quarter would not be returned to the government. So, what happened? Rav Hirsch died on December 31, 1888! His concerns were unnecessary!
