I believe that doing so would be a great Tikkun. The heter "lichvod
haTorah" doesn't convince me at all: all the dancing and singing and
drinking and shmoozing *while the Torah is being read* seem to me the
opposite of kavod. Ditto the practice of calling up everybody in the shul,
which is not even a halachic requirement.
I only wish I could find a minyan that agrees with me on these points.
