An annual question arises this time of year, usually from a woman who will be waiting for her husband to come home and make Havdalah after Maariv on Motzai Yom Kippur, when the fast was already over a few minutes after nightfall. Is she required to wait for Havdalah to break her fast by taking a drink of water?
The question that lies behind the question is whether the five restrictions of affliction obligated on Yom Kippur, are considered part and parcel of its inherent Kedushas HaYom, holiness, or are they regarded as separate, yet synchronized, halachic mandates?
