[Avodah] re costumes on Purim

"My granddaughter asked me yesterday where the use of costumes came to
be a MInhag on Purim. I  did not know the basis of the Purim custom.
Any suggestions?"

Yup. Probably Mardi Gras or the Italian version of it.1500's.
