Actually there is another machloqet within their machloqet: Rav Meidan implicitly said that if an achron, even one as great as the Chatam Sofer, is the first to postulate that a certain halacha is Halacha l'Moshe m'Sinai, we don't have to accept that postulate, with all the attending nafqa minot.
