I am less focused than you.  I, for example, would like to develop an 
O(n^2) algorithm for matrix multiplication some day.  That's not assur, 
but it's not a form of avodas hashem, and a "*total* oveid Hashem" 
wouldn't waste his time on such na'arishkeit.
