I'll be very honest and tell you that I really don't understand the concept of what foods do and don't accompany bread. I honestly believe that it is a concept not relevant to the style of eating that I was brought up with. So I hope you won't mind if I ask you this:

If soup is not a meal-food, and it's not a drink for washing down the solids, then what sort of food *is* it? Would you consider it to be a snack food, like apples and cookies? Is it a whole new category?
