Any attempt to make sense of this midrash scientifically is completely misconceived; the midrash is not a scientific description of anything--it is a mashal (which for Hazal means a figurative use of language, allegory, parable, metaphor, etc.).  For an example of a parshan (a rishon) who approaches this midrash in non-literal terms, see the Ramban on Bereshit 1:14 (toward the end).  IIRC correctly, Rav Dessler (aharon) has something non-literal on this too.
