I should have noted that I was quoting the Gra.
In fact, the four 'common' pronunciations of a cholam can all be transcribed
as combinations of other vowels.
1. Rhymes with 'grow', qometz/shuruk
2. Rhymes with 'pay', segol/chirik
3. Rhymes with 'annoy', qometz/chirik
4. Rhymes with 'allow', patach/shuruk
