Well let's take this idea to the logical extreme: If our grandparents didn't come to Eretz Yisrael, does that mean that we shouldn't?
Answer to your question and the above: You can't compare their situation to ours. Women didn't have learning opportunities; people couldn't come to Eretz Yisrael. So what we can learn from previous generations regarding these questions is very limited.
Nothing was really stopping anyone from doing MA. Therefore, that fact that they chose not to has significance for us.
