I had written:

R' Akiva Blum commented:

Referring to an achsenai, MB 677:2 writes: "The din is that if his wife lights Ner Chanukah at home, then he is yotzay his chiyuv with her lighting, even though he is far from home, and he no longer has to join [with the host] even with prutos."

The MB continues with questions about what his and his wife's kavana was, but that does not detract from the basic din that the wife *can* light for him.
