The origin of saying L'David ori are murky, so it's hard to say how it started and how it subsequently developed. Lam'natzeiach in the beis aivel, though, is an interesting phenomenon. It began as a S'faradi custom said before Ma'ariv. The Ashk'nazim borrowed the practice, but changed the time. It would thus seem that they b'davka wanted it after Ma'ariv.
