This logic makes sense to you and it makes sense to me. But if it had made sense to Chazal, they would not have prohibited various activities prior to Bedikas Chometz, from the fear that we'd forget to do it.

(Ditto for lots of other mitzvos; I just think that Bedikas Chometz is among the most likely to be remembered.)
