Hmmm, I guess you're right.

But it wasn't a treasured gift at first. Remember Ardeban's angry
reaction? If Rebbe wouldn't have been able to mollify or convince
Ardeban (we're assuming that he *was* convinced), would Rebbe have taken
the mezuzah back?
