That was not related to tumah AFAIK, but shelo yazunu 'eynehem min haqokdesh.
 ובפתחה של עלייה, היו שם שתי כלונסות של ארז, שבהן היו עולין לגגה של עלייה.  
ובראשיהן פסיפסין מבדיל בעלייה, בין קודש ובין קודש הקודשים.  ולולין היו פתוחין 
בעלייה לבית קודש הקודשים, שבהן משלשלין את האומנין בתיבות, כדי שלא יזונו את 
עיניהם מבית קודש הקודשים.
