I found this Ritva in Shul and it is pertinent: "V'zeh she'hayu omrim
she'tzrichin parnassah, k'she'hayu aniyim dechukim hayu omrim kach v'lo
b'chol sha'ah." IOW, they wouldn't do this every day...
