<p>How likely is it that someone would spill ink and it would legibly depict
the Mona Lisa?</p>
<p>How likely is it to win the lottery?</p>
<p>The two questions differ in one way… When you go to the lottery
winner and ask them about their chance of winning, they are amazed. But from
the perspective of the lottery, someone usually wins. At therefore most weeks
there is someone amazed that they were the winner. But if you were to happen
to name someone in advance and they just happened to be the winner, that would
be objectively amazing.</p>
<p>I thought about this when looking at the Malbim’s Ayelet haShachar
(usually printed in front of Vayiqra), 20:179. Among the points he makes is
that the Torah will use “כי” to introduce a conditional that may
or may not happen, whereas it uses “אם” to distinguish between
various possible outcomes. “כי” describes picking the lottery
winner in advance. “אם” describes what to do if you are the one
who won.</p>

אח”כ על הנושא בדרך החלטה יבוא בה”א
